5Calls Actions | A 2020 Resolution: No war on our time

From 5calls.org weekly newsletter

A Ship With No Rudder Regardless of which party you support, we can universally agree that major choices in government – especially military ones – should be informed by experts and made with a long term plan for the repercussions of those choices. It’s clear that there is no vision or long term plan right now, and all the experts have already resigned.

The recent military strike in Iraq against an Iranian leader clearly had no plan. There was no evidence that killing Soleimani would prevent any attacks on US or allied forces. There was no communication with Iraqi officials. The strike even killed Iraqi militia leaders fighting against ISIS in the country. Trump was happy to kill whomever was easiest to target as long as it distracted from his looming impeachment trial.

2020 will be a pivotal year in the history of America. Make your commitment to stand up and be heard throughout the year, starting with your calls this week.

No Unilateral War Power

This week both the House and the Senate will vote on war powers resolution to end Trump’s ability to strike Iran and assert that Congress has sole power to declare war as dictated by the Constitution.

No Distractions Allowed

Trump is a master at distraction and those distractions are getting bigger and bolder. Trump’s decision to assassinate Soleimani coincides with the release of a trove of damning internal administration emails showing they knew they were breaking the law. Don’t let it work – demand the Senate hold a fair trial with key witness testifying.

No Legal Basis For War

Trump’s unilateral decision to assassinate Qasem Soleimani, the commander of the Iranian Quds Force, highlights the need to repeal the current Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF). The current AUMF was granted over 18 years ago directly after the 9/11 attacks – it’s now urgent Congress place this important check on the Trump administration.
